My name is “Anzoa” Madelene Kajusa. I am a fourth TRU student pursuing my bachelor’s degree in communication and digital journalism with a minor in sociology. I have completed a directed studies research with supervisor Dr. Tom Waldichuk “The Regional Geography of South Sudan.” Originally born in Khartoum, Sudan, but of South Sudanese descent Madelene and her family moved to Canada as refugees in the early 2000s due to the Second Sudanese Civil War in Sudan. Madelene is from the Ma’di Tribe of South Sudan. A small ethnic group within South Sudan. The “civil war sufficiently diminished the number of Ma’di in the Sudan and most of their villages are now occupied by displaced people from other parts of the South,” (AFRICA | 101 Last Tribes – Madi People, n.d.).
I identify as a first-generation South Sudanese Canadian. It is not easy living in two worlds but I am open to reconnecting with my language and culture. I want to get a master’s degree in geography. My areas of interest include: human geography, cultural geography, feminist geography, regional geography, geography of arts and crafts, medical and health geography, medical sociology, sociology of the environment, watersheds, access to clean drinking water, SDGs, South Sudanese studies, Indigenous studies, intergenerational trauma, youth homelessness, first-generation studies, refugees studies, psychological effects of war and conflicts, art therapy, trauma studies, diasporic communities, and fashion studies.
Research: “The Regional Geography of South Sudan“ explores the emergence of South Sudan as a distinct space through the organizing concepts of regional geography, human geography, cultural geography, feminist geography, the sociological perspective, and cross-cultural interaction. This course gave me a chance to share with others about the South Sudanese community to give us a voice in academics.
