VISA 1500 Introduction to Visual Culture

In this course, students examined different topics and used visual forms like advertising, television, and film. This was an interdisciplinary course, and it was nice to learn various theories and methodologies to real-world examples for critical thinking and gain more knowledge about ourselves and issues around the world. I remember learning about African American history, history in Canada and, history from other parts of the world. We looked at advertising and magnizes how men and women are portrayed in media.

SOCI 1210 Introduction to Sociology II

In this course, I learned more about sociology and I learned about the inequalities in terms of class, race, gender, and sexuality in both the Canadian and global contexts. I was able to question the world around me and society’s social structures. The way our society is set up it creates inequalities for many people creating upstream and down stream factors on why some people are successful and others are not. This was eye-opening because it started my critical thinking and my love and passion for sociology. I use the sociology perspective in my daily life and I continue to question myself around the world around me and how I can make a difference. This class was taught by Dr. Lindsey McKay, she is a wonder professor at TRU. I was so honoured to learn from her because she is a very knowledgeable and caring professor.

SOCI 3120 Sociology of Gender Relations

In this course, we examine gender relations, and social, sexual, and gender inequality. I learned how there have always been gender-diverse people in many cultures and societies. In some places being gender diverse is acceptable and in other places, it is not. I think it’s good to have an understanding of gender because in our society many popes have different gender identities and gender orientations. I think it’s important to be respectful and knowledgeable of others so we can be able to work and interact with each other. It’s good to look at decolonizing society and look at how society is gender and shapes the world around us. This class taught me the importance of learning about gender and how that plays a role in intercultural learning. It doesn’t matter what someone’s gender identity we need to work in a safe/peaceful environment. This class was taught by DR. Humayun Kabir cultural anthropologist at TRU.

SOCI 3430 Migration and Transnationalism

In this course with Dr. Jenny Shaw students examine gender, race, class, sexuality, and paths to migration. We also looked at transnationalism, settlements, and refugees as well. I  enjoyed this class because I got to learn about migration and stories of migration to Canada and other parts of the world. At times this course was changeling for me to hear stories that were personal to me which challenging. I was happy to try to push myself to learn more. This course also challenged my reading comprehension which is something that I am still working on. Dr. Jenny Shaw inspired me to read more and to be more aware of migration studies and the people around us.

JOUR4110_01 – Issues: Case Studies Approach Decolonizing Journalism

In this course we learn about Indigenous Peoples and how they are shown in media. We learned ways to decolonize the practice of journalism and we learned trauma-informed interview techniques. This course was taught by JenniferChrumka, MJ and Laura Grizzlypaws, MEd. I learn so much from them. This class gave me lots of knowledge about Indigenous people and how to decolonize journalism. This course gave me more cultural understanding of Indigenous people and the struggles Indigenous people face today and, how many Indigenous stories are not being represented in media. If Indigenous stories are shown on social media it’s not usually in a positive light. This course gave me more awareness and how to approach Indigenous stories and the respect needed when sharing stories about people who are different from you.

GEOG4480_DS1 – Directed Studies in Geography

The Regional Geography of South Sudan :This course was part of my directed studies research at TRU (Thompson Rivers University) in Kamloops BC, Canada. Directed studies at TRU allow students to undertake a specific topic with a supervisor. My supervisor was Professor Dr. Tom Waldichuk. This course explores the emergence of South Sudan as a distinct space through the organizing concepts of regional geography, human geography, cultural geography, feminist geography, the sociological perspective, and cross-cultural interaction. There is a lack of education being taught about South Sudan in the Canadian school system. There is a huge population of South Sudanese people in Canada. Having this course will let our voices be heard and be represented in a positive light.
