Experience

Support Worker Canucks Autism Network

I started working for CAN ( Canucks Autism Network) in the fall of 2022. My job includes working with children through sports who have autism. It was been a great experience working there because I got to work with a diverse group of kids and have fun too. I get to learn from them and they get to learn from me. Having the skill to work with all types of people is important and aids in global competency which is about developing cultural awareness and respectful interactions in increasingly diverse societies. I learned more about children with autism and had a better understanding of their world. This is a rewarding job and it brightens up my week when I get to hang out with the other support workers and kids.

Intercultural Ambassador TRU fall 2024- April 205

Being an intercultural ambassador is an eye-opening experience because we help to make the campus more inclusive, and welcoming. We believe in anti-racism, indigenization, and decolonization. I will be giving a give-back project in 2025 and, I want to incorporate South Sudanese into it. There are not many South Sudanese people in Kamloops /TRU so it feels good to represent my community here in a good way. It has been an honour to work with Dr. Kyra Garson and Dr. Amie McLean they are both exceptional women who I have the pleasure of learning and working with. I also get to work with wonderful peer mentors and other intercultural ambassadors who bring skills and knowledge from different backgrounds.

Research Assistant Fall 2024-April 2025

I am a research assistant for Dr. Tom Waldichuk in his research engaging in virtual field trips. It is about getting students’ experiences using Google Earth. Google Earth is an example of MR( mixed reality) technology: Using Google allows students to take virtual field trips, see historical sites, and see other parts of the world that they might not have seen. I find it interesting that as a communication student, my skills are handy in other fields like geography. That is where the world is headed to more technology to help improve education. I am excited to be part of his research. It’s fun getting to give presentations and hand out surveys to different classes. It gives me practical teaching skills and helps me gain more confidence speaking to students.

Radio Host on 92.5 CFBX – The Madelene Show

I started my radio show in December of 2023 so almost a year now. On my show, I play music from around the world. I talk about issues in society, storytelling, do poetry, give makeup and fashion tips, play South Sudanese music, give announcements of things happening on and off campus, and play relaxing and fun music. Radio is a great way to share cultures within the city of Kamloops there are so many voices that need to be heard and that radio does just that. The radio show has helped with my public speaking and confidence. I feel like I am better at talking to an audience now sharing stories. The radio station also helps me with critical thinking I do talk about social issues and it helps me think deeper about what is happening around the world and what I can do to help. The Madelene Show airs on Sundays from 5-6 pm on CFBX Campus community radio at TRU.
